PDF to PNG: common questions

PNG or JPG: which is better for PDF pages?

PNG is lossless and best for text, charts and line art. JPG files are smaller and work well for photos, so use PDF to JPG when file size matters more.

Why are my PNG files so large?

Lossless images keep every pixel, so they are bigger than JPGs, especially at 300 dpi. Choose 150 or 72 dpi for smaller files.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. Pages are rendered the way a PDF reader shows them, so the page background stays as it appears on screen.
